ADA
A DIGITAL MEDIA MYSTERY
Ada was my final project for my Visual Story class at the Centre for Digital Media. I have always been interested in experimental methods of storytelling, especially ones combining the digital with the physical world, and I chose to explore this using beacons, Bluetooth radio transmitters that broadcast signals to devices in their vicinity.
The story was told through beacons placed in various locations throughout the project room area at the CDM, with the locations and objects in them being part of the story. Although there were two branching storylines, in order to progress in a single story, users needed to visit the beacons in order, an event handled in the back-end of the application.
My project was done with help from D'arcy Smith of TerraTap technologies, a company that specializes in iBeacon technology, and whose tech handled the back-end load and beacon proximity issues. My work was more front-end based and required an understanding of Javascript, HTML, and CSS. This allowed me to spend more time developing the story and exploring how effective a story told with this method would be.
